Ateneum Art Museum has stood looking over the Railway Square in Helsinki for more than 130 years. Designed by Theodor Höijer, the building opened in October 1888, and Ateneum’s evergrowing art collection has been on display to the public ever since. The building also served as a school for fine and applied arts until 1983.

Today, the Ateneum Art Museum administers the oldest and largest collection of art in Finland. Curated from that collection, Stories of Finnish Art tells viewers about the history and development of art in Finland. The show also tells the story of the layered Finnish society and how artists saw it in their own day. Contrasted with works of international art in the museum’s collection, the exhibition offers a rich and varied image of the evolution of Finnish art.
