Eero Nelimarkka exhibition at Ateneum 13.3.–13.9.2026.
Exhibition catalogue in Finnish.
Eero Nelimarkka (1891–1977) was a versatile painter whose long and eventful career extended from the 1910s to his final years in the 1970s. This richly illustrated catalogue, published in conjunction with the exhibition at Ateneum, is the first comprehensive survey of Nelimarkka’s life’s work.Drawing on the latest art-historical research, the texts in this publication shed light on aspects of the artist that have previously received little attention. Nelimarkka’s work has been regarded as central to the formation of Finnish identity, yet his art also reflected international trends. His œuvre is characterised by Modernist experimentation and a subtle sense of uncanniness, as well as by deep religiosity and a strong attachment to the Ostrobothnian landscape and agrarian milieu.
