1913 Natalia Goncharova (1881 - 1962) stood at the very centre of the radical Moscow avant-garde. Her exhibition that year comprised over eight hundred artworks that transcended media and styles to include paintings and works on paper, designs for theatre, textiles and fashion, and much more. A controversial figure, she appeared in public with abstract designs painted on her face, and the censors repeatedly removed works from her exhibitions. From this whirlwindof activity before the First World War emerged a powerful body of work that was the foundation for her later fame. In Paris she became one of the most innovative designers to work on sets and costume designs for Sergei Diaghilev´s Ballets Russes.
Accompanying a major retrospective of the artist´s work, this richly illustrated publication brings together paintings rarely seen outside Russia. With essays by leading experts, Natalia Goncharova traces the complex and fascinatingproduction of one of the trailblazers of twentieth-century art and design.
